If You Can’t Hear This Sound, You’re Getting Old
As if we weren’t already worried enough about that rapid approach to 30, this hearing test has just made us feel very old indeed.
The test, which comes courtesy of AsapSCIENCE, is doing the rounds again – it’s basically the YouTube version of those awful high pitched sounds horrible shopkeepers used to play outside their stores in order to disperse teenagers.
Basically, if you’re aged 25 or over you shouldn’t be able to hear what is known as the mosquito tone – namely a noise above 17.4kHz.
And, I can confirm that I can’t, which makes me a little bit sad.
It’s all down to age-induced hearing loss, otherwise known as presbycusis, which occurs as the hairs in your ear wear down as they are exposed to sound throughout your lifetime.
Lovely.
For most of us, it’ll happen by the time we’re in our mid-twenties and continue to get worse and worse, especially if you spent most of your youth at Motörhead concerts.
You can get a more in-depth analysis of just how shitty your hearing is atfreemosquitoringtones.org – if you dare!
It just goes to show that no matter how you try to fight the process of aging – exercise, wearing low riding jeans, plastic surgery, street slang – you just can’t avoid losing your hearing.
Talk about sobering…
